NAS setup

Below is a short descriptions of what hardware and software I currently use for my home server.

Tip

I live in Norway, so some of my choices will reflect that.

NAS
#

Main reasons:

  • Price was quite good.
  • 4 Drive Bays
  • You can install other NAS OS and not void the warranty.
  • Its processor can handle media streaming @ 4k.
  • You can use which ever brand of SSDs and HDDs you want (I did not choose Synology due to this).

I imported mine from the UK version of the Amazon store. Though I did not think about that it’s power cable would be for the UK wall sockets… If for some reason this happens to you too; the power connector used on this NAS is a “Mickey Mouse” or C5 connector/plug. I got this one from Power.no. Any power cable that uses that connector and is rated to be used for laptop power blocks should work!

This seems to really be the only real option for image self-hosting. Though luckily its really good.

Explain:

  • Migrate from google photos (immich-go and its edge cases)
  • Actually useful local AI search

Media Streaming
#

From what I can see, there are two main options – Plex and Jellyfin. Plex wants a monthly fee or pay a hefty price for a lifetime licence to enable it. I have nothing against paying for a service. But I really prefer a one-time purchase that is not ludicrous. Currently its 250 USD, which I think is fair. But it will be raised to 750 USD 1st July 2026. I think that trend is not a good one. Therefore I’ll use Jellyfin. Which is great!

Media Ripping

I use MakeMKV as the software and a Verbatim 43888 as the optical drive to rip blurays. Note that to get the Verbatim 43888 to work. You need to flash it to firmware version 1.03. More on this later

Why not Obsidian. Mainly because I want to try out the alternatives, and its Open Source! If I would want to switch my files are just .md files. So no worries there.
